ZIPPER GLAM

In partnership with the blog Chinese Graffiti, Living Aurora will be posting this week a panorama of Chinese fashion in times of globalization. Designers to keep an eye on and challenges of contemporary China in the fashion market will be on the agenda this Thursday. The post will be authored by the editor of Chinese Graffiti and Chinese history expert, Jessica Laiter.

And just to kick off the warmup, today’s post is about a Chinese designer who stirs fashion in New York.

From Hong Kong, the designer Sohung Tom – or Tom Sohung – transfers the versatility of his name to his collections. Jackets that have more than ten zippers that open and wind up in unexpected places, as well as coats that seem to come out of an ultra-chic sci-fi movie, showcase the creativity of the Chinese stylist based in New York. The zipper is an element to be worn by those who are willing to play with fashion. Having graduated from one of New York’s most prestigious fashion schools, the Parsons School of Design, Tom Sohung also surpasses gender clichés. Often, the designer uses men’s ties to make up women’s clothing. It is not uncommon to see pieces of ties in dresses and belts signed by Sohung. Well, if daring is what the modern woman wants, we’ve already found our designer.

Are you in NY? Visit the studio and see how each piece is produced!
